A Nightly Opportunity for Spiritual Elevation

By Muslema Purmul

Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) mentions in the Quran,
‘Is the one who worships devoutly in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, fearful of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, (to be accounted equal with a disbeliever)?
Say: are those who know equal with those who don’t  know?
But only people of understanding will pay heed.’”
[Al-Zumar 39: 9]
“ Establish worship at the going down of the sun until the dark of the night, and (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn. Lo! (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed. And some part of the night awake for its recital, as voluntary worship for you. It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”
[Al-Israa’ 17: 78-79]
“Verily, the night vigil is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain.”
[Al-Muzzammil 73:6]
“And the (faithful) servants of the Merciful are those…who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing…’
[Al-Shuara' 25: 63-64]
“Their sides forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of what We have bestowed on them. No soul knows what is kept hid from them of joy, as a reward for what they used to do.’
[Al-Sajdah 32: 16-17]
“Those who pray for pardon in the watches of the night.”
[Al ‘Imraan 3: 17]
Abu Hurayra reports that the Messenger of Allah (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was asked,
“What prayer is most virtuous after the obligatory prayers?”
He (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “Prayer in the depths of the night.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah]
The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said,
“Hold fast to night prayer, for it was the way of the righteous before you, a way of drawing closer to your Lord, an expiation for wrong deeds, and a shield from sin.” [Tirmidhi]
The Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said,
“Whoever recites ten verses in qiyaam will not be recorded as one of the forgetful. Whoever recites a hundred verses in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the devout, and whoever prays with a thousand verses in qiyaam will be recorded as one of the muqantireen (those who pile up good deeds).” [Reported by Abu Dawood and Ibn Hibbaan. It is a hasan report. Saheeh al-Targheeb, 635].
How can we prefer sleep to it, or choose to stay up late doing other things and still miss such an opportunity?
The Messenger of Allah (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said in a Hadith Qudsi:
“Our Lord (subhanahu wa ta'ala) descends each night to the earth’s sky when there remains the final third of the night, and He says:
Who is saying a prayer to Me that I may answer it?
Who is asking something of Me that I may give it him?
Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him?”
[Bukhari, Muslim, Malik, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud]
After all these reasons to pray Qiyam in the night, subhan Allah how can we resist? How can we prefer sleep to it, or choose to stay up late doing other things and still miss such an opportunity? In Surah Al-Muzzammil Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) describes the late hours of the night as being when our speech and contemplation is stronger while the day-time is spent busy with people and work. There is a special enjoyment for this act of worship. It’s one of the things we love most about Ramadan, and yet may so quickly abandon.

Practical Suggestions

The practical tip is very simple:
1. Start praying two extra rakahs after whatever you normally pray after Isha.
So if you normally don’t pray two rakahs of sunnah after Isha, then start with that. If you do pray your sunnah, add two more to it. Every week try to add another tworakahs until Ramadan begins. If you can only maintain just your two extra rakahs, that’s a great accomplishment insha Allah.
If you already pray Qiyam after Isha’, then your task is a bit harder. Try to wake up half an hour before fajr and pray your extra rakahs then. If you cannot do that, wake up during that time and at least make dua as your duas are more accepted then.
Subhan Allah, there are countless stories of people who were granted seemingly impossible wishes and no they didn’t wish upon a star! They got up, made wudu, and prayed to Allah (SWT)  late in the night and asked Him directly, during the hour where He Himself asks, “Who is saying a prayer to Me that I may answer it? Who is asking something of Me that I may give it him? Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him?” It would be a great time to take out your list of intentions and pray for them! A nightly opportunity worth more than we can imagine!
2. Start with ten verses for your extra two rakahs and gradually increase to a hundred so you may be recorded as one of the devout!
Before anyone gets scared, a hundred verses especially from the last juz’ (part) of the Quran, is not very hard to read. You can add ten verses a night and in ten nights you will be reading a hundred verses. You are also allowed to hold the Quran and read from it while praying Qiyam. Again, even if you never get past ten verses a night inQiyam, that is something very valuable and a blessing not to be undermined. Express your shukr (gratitude) to Him for what He allows you to do, and He will increase it!
May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) allow us to graduate ‘from the school of the night’! May we be recorded with the devout.
When we feel lazy, an easy line to remember to hold to: “It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station. (Al-Israa’ 17:79)
That is, a praised station with Him (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala).

Women Praying Under or Above the Mosque

Women Praying Under or Above the Mosque

By Shaykh Muhammad Naasirud Deen al-Albaanee

Question:
Here there are some mosques where the women pray under the mosque, in a basement level or above the mosque on another floor. And we women sometimes pray in these mosques, following the imaam from where we cannot see the imaam, nor the followers, and sometimes there is a large empty space in the area where the men pray. Is such praying of ours acceptable, especially when we cannot see the imaam, nor any of the followers? Sometimes when we enter the mosque we do not know which raka'ah (unit of prayer) he is in. So is it permissible in this situation to follow the takbeer by the voice only? Is it permissible for us to follow the imaam while we are on a lower or upper floor, knowing that there is sometimes space remaining in the mosque itself?
Answer:
The answer consists of two parts:
  1. Prayer in such circumstances is acceptable wherever the women pray in the mosque, whether that is in an upper or lower floor. As long as they hear the takbeeraat of the imaam in the standing position, in the bowing position and in the prostration.
  2. There is no reason for the women to have to perform their prayer like this, except when the area of the men is too crowded and there is no room for the women's prayer behind them. In this case, it is allowed for them to pray on an upper or lower floor. But when this mosque, where the imaam, prays with the men behind him, has a lot of space left in it, then it is not permissible for the women to go to up to an upper floor or to go down to a lower floor where they will not see the movement of the imaam, nor the movements of the followers. There are two reasons for this:
  • The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "The best lines for the men are those in the front, the worst lines are the last and the best lines for the women are at the rear and the worst are at the front." Here he means the ground upon which the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his Companions prayed, whereas the women were not on an upper or lower floor.
  • Another reason for this is that the voice could sometimes be soft and at other times completely unheard so that the prayer of the followers on the upper or lower floor who cannot see the people behind the imaam praying in vulnerable to becoming void.
So to summarise this answer, the prayer in an upper or lower level is acceptable, but it is not allowed to designate such a place for prayer when there is clearly enough space in the men's musallaa (designated place of prayer) that the women can pray in the back behind them.

praying Alone in the Past Row of Prayer

Question: If you enter the masjid and the first row of prayer is complete, can you pull someone from it behind so that he can pray with you (in the second row) or should you just pray by yourself?
Answer: If the hadeeth about pulling someone back from the first row so that one would not pray alone in the second row were authentic, it would be obligatory to base the opinion on it. However, its chain of narration is not authentic, as I have explained in Irwaa-ul-Ghaleel and As-Silsilah Ad-Da'eefah (second volume). Therefore so long as this hadeeth is not authentic, then the person who enters the masjid and the row of prayer in front of him is complete, he must try to squeeze into the row that is before him.
This is possible in most cases, during this era in which a majority of Muslims have abandoned the act of joining tightly (by squeezing together) in the lines of prayer, for many of them do not stand close together in the lines of prayer. So if he finds that the row is complete, he should try his best to find an empty space in it, even if he has to gesture to the one he wants to pray next to, to make some space for him to enter. But if he is not able to do this, either because the people in the row are closely packed together or because some of the people praying do not make room for him, then he could stand in the second row by himself, and his prayer will be valid. This is because the Prophet's (saws) saying,"There is no prayer for the one who prays in the row by himself" is only in reference to the extent of one's ability and adequacy as when performing all the rest of the acts of worship.
We know, for example, that standing for the obligatory prayer is a pillar (of the prayer). Therefore, if someone prays sitting while he has the ability to stand, his prayer is not valid. However, if he is not able to stand, then he could pray sitting, as the Prophet (saws) said: "Pray standing. But if you are not able to, then (pray) sitting. But if you are not able to, then (pray) on your bed." This goes the same for the case of the individual who prays behind the row by himself, in that his condition is that he is not able to join into the row that is before him. So the hadeeth, "There is no prayer for the one who prays alone behind the row", is most likely applicable to the person that takes this issue lightly or to the one who turns away from this legal ruling. As has been done by many people, especially those mu'addhins who do not join into the rows, but rather pray by themselves in places near to the door (of the masjid). So these individuals are the ones whom the hadeeth is directed to.
As for the man who enters the masjid and tries to join into the row but is not able to, nor does anyone come that will join him (in the second row), then he can pray by himself. And Allaah does not burden a soul with a responsibility, except that He has given it the ability to fulfill the responsibility. This is the view of Shaikh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyyah.
